Fall Flavors

Here are a few fun ways to get in the spirit of fall:

  1. Any recipe you can make with russet potatoes, you can make with sweet potatoes—mashed, roasted, potato latkes (potato cakes)—even corned beef hash. Top any of your creations with a dollop of sour cream or plain yogurt laced with orange zest and brown sugar.
  2. Stuffing isn’t just for Thanksgiving. It’s easy to make and easy to change up. For instance, instead of white bread dressing, make one with pumpernickel, diced bratwurst and sauteed red onion to serve alongside pork chops or a roast.
  3. To dress up simple desserts, saute pecans in a little butter, sugar and ground cinnamon, then use to top apple pie, ice cream or pumpkin desserts.
  4. For an autumn-inspired salsa, dice up apples or pears and combine with celery, toasted pecans, a touch of chopped fresh thyme or parsley, and a little lemon juice. Serve over roast chicken or pork.
  5. Maple syrup just tastes like autumn, and it's not just for pancakes. Add it to practically anything for a big dose of fall flavor—desserts, sauces, vinaigrettes, or glazes for meats or vegetables.
